Artist’s note: ‘Evensong’ describes feelings inspired by the peace of a chapel interior and a poem found within. Viewed through a large gateway, representing possibility and excitement, the interior of the work shows a garden - or a childlike response to the sensory experiences within. The title, ‘Evensong’, refers both to the final word of the poem and to the idea of birdsong at the end of a day - shown as extracts from the 1717 book, Bird Fancyer’s Delight - pieces for recorder to teach caged birds to sing. The joy depicted in the outstretched arms can also be read as despair for lost childhood, and the contrast of joy and pain is represented by the pairing of the boy and the angel.
